Domestic Yaks Wild Yaks - Keeping

Yaks are easy to fence; they require no special consideration since they mix well with other livestock, and only need some shade when it's hot. Yaks eat about half of what an average beef animal does. Yaks carry loads equivalent to a packhorse, but require no special feeding other than browsing. Yaks are trained in several months, can carry a full pack by 2 years of age, and can be used for more than 20 years. Yaks groom themselves, clean their hooves with the help of their horns.

Disturbance of their habitat, hybridization with domestic stock, and diseases also threaten the wild Yak. It's difficult to enforce protection within the mountainous regions of Yak range.

Wild Yaks are officially protected in China and India. Conservation measures for wild Yaks include surveys to locate viable populations, legal protection, captive breeding programs, and the establishment of reserves.
