Domestic Yaks are much smaller than their wild correspondents because of crossbreeding. They are used as pack and saddle animals in the mountains where trucks aren't practical. Their milk, beef, and wool are very important. Yaks produce two types of hair. The outer coarse hair is used for ropes, rugs, and belts; the soft under hair is comparable to cashmere. Usually Yaks produce 2-3 pounds of fiber annually. Natives use dried dung of the Yak as the only obtainable fuel on the treeless plateaus.
Yak milk is a rich creamy color with a high fat content of 5-7%. It is usually processed into butter, cheese, or yogurt. As for Yak meat, it is tender, low in fat and high in protein. It sells at a price equivalent to bison. Yaks have vigorous calves with no birthing problems. And besides all this, wild Yaks are valuable source of genetic material for the improvement of domestic stock. The Yak-cow crosses are more valuable and stronger than cows.
Domestic Yaks Wild Yaks - Personality
Yaks are very intelligent, quiet, and gentle. They have a developed sense of hearing, smell, and sight, and are curious to investigate everything in their vicinity. Yaks learn and retain behaviors such as trailering, packing, pulling, and being groomed. Yaks' horns are not dangerous, and can be used as handles onto which to tie things.
